About HF:
HF (Hydrofluoric Acid) is an inorganic acid derived from dissolving hydrogen fluoride in water. It is non-combustible, colorless, and emits an irritating odor. HF is extremely corrosive and attacks all tissues of the body. Contact with the skin causes deep tissue burns that are slow to heal. Even dilute (less than 25%) solutions may cause major tissue damage after several hours. Stronger concentrations cause immediate, painful burns, tissue destruction, and bone damage. HF vapors can severely burn the eyes, leading to blindness. Concentrations above 50 ppm can be fatal after short exposure.
HF Incompatibilities:
HF attacks glass, concrete, metals, and organic materials such as leather, rubber, and wood. It should always be stored in plastic containers with secondary containment, never in glass.
HF Spills / Safety:
In case of HF spill, immediately vacate the area and alert the safety department. Avoid skin exposure and always wear proper protective gear including gloves and eye protection. Safety showers and eye wash stations must be clearly marked and easily accessible. A pack of Safety Gel HF should always be available to all personnel working with HF.
HF Accidents / Exposures:
For any HF skin contact, first aid must begin immediately. Remove contaminated clothing and wash the area with water for at least 15 minutes. Apply a generous amount of Safety Gel HF and gently massage using gloves. White specks around the burn indicate the gel is reacting. Reapply if pain returns. For eye exposure, rinse eyes with water for at least 5 minutes, then use Safety Gel HF Eye Wash Solution for another 5 minutes before seeking medical help.
HF Antidote Gel:
Safety Gel HF is available in 30g containers. It is recommended that anyone handling HF should keep one container at the workplace, one on their person, and one at home. For maximum safety, Safety Gel HF should be issued to all employees potentially exposed to HF.
Storage:
Store in a refrigerator above 4°C and replace with a fresh supply before the expiration date. Always wear disposable nitrile gloves when applying Safety Gel HF.
